I Get The Blue Screen Of Death When I Try To Bypass My Router And Plug Computer Into Modem?

been having trouble with my internet...I use a router, and my internet is usually slower than it should be, but my modem always has a good signal. I dont know why my speed fluctuates so much....ill get a decent speek on my computer about 1/4 of the time.
i tried to bypass the router and just plug my laptop into the modem itself...but when I open internet explorer my computer gets the blue screen of death and tells me its dumping physical memory. have tried in safe mode as well but i get the screen again. why might i be getting the blue screen?
Probably a wiring problem.
