Q&A: When on contract can I buy a new phone, put my sim card in and use the contract on the new phone?

Question by Brunette babe: When on contract can I buy a new phone, put my sim card in and use the contract on the new phone?
I’ve got a virgin mobile contract- 18 months
I want to buy an iphone but don’t want to wait until the end of my contract.
Could I buy the iphone and put my contract sim card in to it?

Provided the new phone is unlocked, yes.

  1. yes you can but make sure the other phone is unlocked or on virgin mobile already so it works. but a contract sim can go in almost all phones 😉 so it should work

  2. You can, with a couple big rules to remember. This can be done as long as the carrier is the same. You can NOT take an ATT simcard and place it into a T-Mobile phone or the other way around, unless the phone is “GSM Unlocked”. You also can not do that with the iPhone as it requires a special plan. You can not do that with Blackberries unless you have net/data with your current plan, unless you do not want 99% of the blackberries functionality.
