Question by JMan: What cell phones can I use with the old AT&T Wireless network?
I have a great AT&T Charter GSM plan ($ 99 unlimited calls, free long distance, free roaming) which I don't want to lose but I don't like my phone. I'm currently using a Siemens S46 and have bought replacement phones over the years but would like to switch. What other phones can I use that would be compatible with the old, pre-Cingular- AT&T Wireless GSM network? Can I just buy a new phone, and if so for which network? I see people posting questions about "unlocking" phones - is that necessary if I buy a new phone and if so how do I go about doing that? Are there any licensing issues with AT&T using one of these phones? Thanks in advance for your help.

Best answer:

Answer by Inuyasha
A Cingular phone should work since Cingular and AT&T are the same network.

Question by rehab, the sequel.: How is it that people buy cell phones using an outside network?
What I mean is, for example, let's say I wanted to purchase the new Sprint Rumor cell phone. I'm growing less and less fond of their services, so I'd much prefer a Verizon plan. How is it that I buy the Sprint cell phone but provide it with Verizon services? People keep telling me "You have to get it unlocked" or "SIMS card" but they don't explain. Is this is the correct information, what's that mean? If not, please tell me what I'm actually supposed to do.

Best answer:

Answer by Alex
Yes this is correct. I dont know exactly how to do it but you by any phone you want, then you put your sim card in the new phone from the other phone. Whe you turn on the phone it will ask you for a pin or password of some type... thats the part you have to figure out..... go on youtube they have videos.... I my tmobile phone and service... try it

First off I am running Windows XP SP2. I have both a network adapter connected to a router which goes into the modem via cable and is a much faster connection, as well as a wireless adapter which is fast enough for internet not fast enough for games.
Well this morning I turned on my computer, keeping in mind last night everything was fine well this morning I cannot get the internet through the network adapter no matter what I try. It says I have limited or no connectivity because the network did not assign a network address to the computer. When I try to repair it says it cannot renew my ip address .
There is another computer on this network, it is working fine so I tried bypassing the router, then tried the cable from that computer on this one. Nothing worked. I updated the driver on the network card, which is a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC, but it said there is no update available. I found a website that told me to change the speed and duplex from auto to 10mbps full duplex, and for just a couple minutes that actually worked. But then it went back to no connectivity again. After that I tried a system restore back a couple days but still nothing. Finally I hooked up through the wireless and here I am.
I'm not terribly computer savvy, though I can usually fix problems myself I am having a terrible time understanding all the jargon on the tech websites so if anyone can help me kindof dumb down your answers please lol. Thanks in advance!

It is a really lame phone and I can't claim another on the insurance just yet as I have to wait a certain time. But I called the police and someone handed my old mobile in. It is obviously blacklisted. I've been to this website...

and would like to ask if anyone knows if this service will unblock my mobile. It says it unlocks any phone via the IMEI number but I'm not sure if it will unblock it. I know you're not supposed to do this but it is my phone and I'm not trying to defraud anybody.
