What Are Some Ways I Can Make This Computer Faster?

I have been trying to help a friend speed up her Dell desktop computer. It has Windows Vista on it. It takes a long time to go from webpage to webpage. I was going to take it back to the manufacturers settings, but she cannot remember the password she gave it in the beginning. Are there any other ways to make this computer go faster? or can someone give me a suggestion how to bypass the windows vista password?

  1. Maybe she has too much junk on her computer.
    Try these junk file cleaners:
    CCleanerhttp://www.ccleaner.com/
    Advanced System Care Freehttp://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscare…
    Or my all time favorite…
    TuneUp Utilities 2009http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-u…
TuneUp Utilities is a shareware, but the trial is really worth it.
After clearing her files, she should try defrag her hard drive with Smart Defrag.http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.ht…
Take note that you can only defrag with normal defragmenters only if your disk space is at least more than 15%.
If you are willing to pay for a better product that defrags more deeply, try Raxco PerfectDisk 10.http://www.perfectdisk.com/
It’s possible to defrag a drive with <1% with PerfectDisk 10.

  2. Depends on the processor and RAM amount.
If her desktop has a decent processor and low RAM then just upgrade to more RAM. You can click on start > computer to see the RAM amount she currently has. anything under 1 gig for Vista is going to run slow and she can buy more RAM at any electronic store fairly cheap.
Another thing to look at is to see whether or not she upgraded to Vista from XP without upgrading the other components of the computer. Vista is big on visualizations so the processor and RAM usually are higher. Switching back to or just buying XP if her processor is slower would be a good solutions. XP doesn’t use alot of RAM.
Also she could choose how she wants her computer to be gearded towards:
    Best performance
    Best visualization
    Best power usage, etc
i would say to try to use a good program like Advanced System Optimizer for Vista to clean up her temp files, and remove un-needed programs as well as defrag her hard drive.
Here is their link. I think they still offer a free 30 day trialhttp://www.systweak.com/VistaOptimizer/

  3. It probably needs more memory. VIsta is a true memory hog like no other. I wouldn’t run a computer with Vista unless it had at least 3 GB of ram.

  4. WHAT KIND OF ITERNET SHE HAVE?cable or dial up?you can disk defragment. delete cookies and files in the internet options in control panel.
might want to run an ad-aware scan
