Why Does Vista Update Not Work?

I need to bypass the system requirement to use my university's internet through its proxy. It requires me to update but I only end up wasting 3 hours to update and the computer reverts the changes at the end for some reason all the time. Can't install this update please HELP!
I uninstalled norton antivirus and still doesn't work.
